Foot path of Marquié
1 - SOME DIRECTIONS
Departure point: village square of Montclar
Average duration : 1,30 hours
Distance: 4 Km
Map: I.G.N. N° 2441 West

2 - ROUTE DESCRIPTION
Take the D60 road between the 2 café's direction of Faveyrolles (it is the village main street going down). Just before the sign indicating the end of the village, at the Maria statue take the road on the right side direction Farret and Martrin. Watch carefully as soon as you are on this road; The foot path you must take starts there. But first take a D tour to see the tree of life on the other side of the street (See "Nice to know"). The path leads along the road and is much nicer to walk because of the shade. As soon as the path joins the road , take the road to the right leading to St Peyre and La Marquié.
When you arrive at the junction you will pass a fir wood on your left and take the road right. At your right in northern direction you can see clearly the village Montclar with its beautiful positioned water tower (See "Nice to know"). Follow the path leading down. Be careful, the trail leaves the road for a couple of hundred meters before it reaches La Marquié, which is private property. Follow the path up to the stream that babbles down through the woods.
Cross the stream and take the path on the opposite side, that's going up in a steep ascend. During the climb pass "Le Bosc" at your right. Arriving above you will see bee hives on both sides of the path. Careful, don't disturb the bees. Arriving at the community road, you will see Montclar at your right and the water tower on the opposite side. Turn right and go down back to the village. Pause at the statue of St. Antoine (See "Nice to know").

3 - HISTORY AND NICE TO KNOW
The village : its square with the arches, its stone doorposts of doors and windows and very old houses.
The crucifix of St. Antoine : It is very old and there are strange, still unexplained marks on it.
The observation point: you find it a couple of hundred meters from the village on the left side of the D60 direction Coupiac. It is at the water tower, where you will find a map of the surroundings and a telescope giving a 360° panoramic view. In the south the mountains of Lacaune, in the east the ends of the plateau of Larzac and in the north Lévézou.
The sculptured tree: this dead elm tree close to the party hall at the end of the village direction St Affrique ) is a sort of monument and thanks to the creativity of Pierre Vasseur the tree was brought back to life. A long time the dream of this talented sculptor, who spends his vacation here in Montclar every summer for a couple of weeks, was to try his talents on a tree and give the tree back its life and to give something to the village. You can guess how this strange story developed: in August 1995 the artist and the tree met, it was like lightning stroke! On the elm tree Pierre Vasseur sculptured the landscape where the tree stroke root and which he called "tree of life". He also engraved part of the village hymne in to a escutcheon: "Montclar es bastit sus la pèira, Montclar perira pas" (Montclar is build on stone, Montclar will never disappear). What a romantic proposal to this country by this man who lives in Paris!
